"Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof is sure."
This “Stone” is well recognized as the representation of Christ. It is written: "Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner." (1 Peter 2:6-7) Christ is the One referred to as smiting this image which symbolized the four great kingdoms of the world.
It is important to note that this “Stone” struck the whole image while it was yet standing. Nowhere in the scriptures does it relate that the stone stuck the feet of the image as many expositors mistakenly proclaim today. Verse 35 of this same chapter tells us…“Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, BROKEN TO PIECES TOGETHER, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them.” You see the image is gone! EVEN THE TOES! “No place was found for them.” Some expositors project the Kingdom of God to be in a so-called "Millennial" age to come. Nebuchadnezzar's Image shows that all things have been fulfilled! How could the Kingdom of God be yet in the future?
Let us verify these important facts of history...When the Babylonian Kingdom was overtaken by the Medes and Persians, it did not cease to exist. It’s people, their culture; all of its characteristics were simply absorbed into this particular Kingdom. The same circumstances occurred as Alexander the Great conquered this Medo-Persian Kingdom. All became his and the Greeks then ruled. Dominion, territory, languages and customs were absorbed into the Grecian Kingdom. The same events came to pass, as the Ceasars of the Roman Empire took control over ALL the provinces through their “Pax-Romana.” These Kingdoms represented Paganism, although they all had their multiplicity of gods. When Rome fell, they all fell! This “Stone” struck the image as Christ came into His dominion and power. His Kingdom marked the end of Paganism.
Let us not miss the validity of Christ’s Kingdom being a spiritual reign and dominion. It is written in Revelation 12:10…“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ.” When did that happen? It happened when the “Stone” smote the image! It happened when Jesus established His Kingdom here in the hearts of those who would accept Him as Savior and Lord. Remember Jesus said, “Ye must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God.” When was that made possible? It was made possible when Christ paid the supreme price to atone for man’s sin at Calvary. He came once and He accomplished ALL that He came to do or He surely would not have cried out in agony on that old rugged cross… “IT IS FINISHED.”
Although Christianity began to dispel the darkness of paganism, as these kingdoms fell, it did not become a “mountain” immediately. It is written that the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. (Daniel 2:35b) The spiritual reign and dominion of Christ began the Christian era in the first century historically and scripturally. However! As historians confirm, a great apostasy began to develop about the latter part of the second century. "
